Salt
Salt has been AkzoNobel's business since 1918. Starting as Royal Dutch Salt Industries (KNZ) in Boekelo, the Netherlands, they first obtained their products by means of evaporation in open pans. The salt was dissolved in underground salt layers, formed hundred of millions of years ago. In 1926, they adopted the far more energy efficient method of vacuum evaporation. When the Twente-Rijn canal was built in the early ‘30’s, they moved their plant to Hengelo, to take advantage of the waterway connections.
The discovery of salt in the Northern part of the Netherlands in 1951, and the facilities for loading seagoing ships there, led to the construction of a salt-producing plant in Delfzijl, which came on stream in 1959. Around 1963 they extended their business by starting salt production in Denmark, to serve the Scandinavian markets as well.
These days, AkzoNobel's Salt Specialties is one of the world's leading salt specialists, supplying high-quality products for all different kinds of applications. Salt Specialties exports its products throughout the whole world. These products cover a broad spectrum of grain sizes, ranging from micro fine, to coarse salt, to compacted products. Their business is well known for the strong brand names under which its products are sold, such as Jozo®, KNZ®, Sanal®, Suprasel®, Broxo® and Broxomatic®.
In their market approach they distinguish six end-customer market segments: Retail, Food, Pharma, Agriculture, Water Treatment and Industrial. With this segmentation they are able offer different value propositions to customers varying from commodities in the industrial market to high value specialties in the pharmaceutical market.
Their philosophy is that they deliver 'Tomorrow’s Answers Today' and therefore they are constantly looking for new and better products that serve the needs of their customers and that can improve their businesses.
With philosophies as closely matched to those at ADGER, it makes perfect sense for ADGER to be a supplier of Akzo Nobel salt products.
Why Broxo?
Hard water costs money…
Hard water contains excessive levels of dissolved calcium- and magnesium ions. Where hard water is used, lime deposits – also called ‘scaling’ – can reduce the lifetime and (heating) performance of appliances, pipes and plumbing. In addition, hard water reduces the cleaning capabilities of many soaps and detergents.
Water softening
Fortunately, hard water can be softened. Common water-softening systems remove the unwanted calcium- and magnesium ions by a process called ion exchange. The heart of such an ion exchanger is formed by one or more reservoirs filled with millions of tiny synthetic resin beads. These porous beads are initially loaded with sodium-ions, loosely bound to the resin.
|
|
|
|
When hard water passes through the beads, the calcium and magnesium ions are attracted strongly to the resin, and repel and displace the sodium ions, which then take the place of the calcium and magnesium ions originally in the water supply.
Regeneration salt
In time, however, the sodium stored in the ion-exchange beads becomes exhausted. Therefore the beads must be periodically regenerated, i.e. refilled with sodium ions and freed from the accumulated calcium and magnesium ions. This is done by washing the beads with a concentrated solution of sodium chloride.
Usually the necessary brine solution is prepared automatically in a separate storage tank in which a compacted regeneration salt – in the form of sodium chloride tablets or granules – slowly dissolves.
Constant (ISO) quality
Akzo Nobel’s manufacturing sites meet the highest international standards. All their production sites are not only ISO 9001 certified, but also meet the requirements set out in the HACCP (=Hazard Analysis by Critical Control Points) regulations. In addition, all Broxo® products satisfy the German industrial standard for water-softening salt (DIN 19604 – type 2).
Finally, since many water-softening systems are also used for drinking water, Broxo® salts are hygienically packed and free from harmful (biological) contaminants.

Broxo® salts for efficient water softening
The efficiency of water-softening installations depends largely on the quality of the salt used. The fact is that compacted salt is necessary to produce a brine solution for regenerating the ion exchanger, which forms the heart of the softener.
A good regeneration salt dissolves evenly and gradually – to supply just enough salt as needed – but never disintegrates. To satisfy these conflicting demands, AkzoNobel developed very pure, high-pressure compacted regeneration salts. Therefore we can offer you a variety of specialized products – Broxo®, Broxetten®, Broxo Block® – for any application.
Very pure vacuum salt
First of all, a good regeneration salt contains no harmful soluble, insoluble or micro-biological contaminants. Residual insoluble substances can plug delicate parts of your water softener, such as valves, or form a layer of sediment in the brine storage tank. Soluble contaminants, on the other hand, form a threat to the effectiveness of the ion-exchange resin and the quality of the softened water.
Therefore, all Broxo® products – unlike sea salt or rock salt and most other vacuum salts – are produced from the highest quality salt and are free from additives.
Compacted under high pressure
Secondly, the regeneration salt should dissolve evenly and gradually, releasing sodium chloride cycle after cycle, up till the end. Many cushions, nuggets and other forms of regeneration salt, however, are compacted under low pressure. They therefore tend to disintegrate prematurely. Disintegration – technically referred to as ‘mushing’ – may cause sedimentation and caking in the storage tank or other parts of the system.
All Broxo® products, however, retain their integrity, even after long periods of immersion in the brine storage tank. This is due to our special production method, in which the salt is compacted under controlled conditions and high pressure. The use of Broxo® therefore effectively eliminates the need for cleaning the storage tank, and helps to avoid expensive maintenance.
Made-to-measure for every application
AkzoNobel developed a complete product line of various grain sizes in order to meet precisely the process and equipment requirements in each individual case. Broxo® granules and Broxetten® tablets are developed for example for dental practices and hair dressers. On the other hand our special Broxo Blocks® are suitable for compact water-softening systems.
No wonder that the world’s leading manufacturers of water-softening equipment recommend Broxo® regeneration salts.

Suprasel Reduced Sodium Salt

If your aim is to reduce sodium, Akzo Nobel have a standard product which contains a mixture of Calcium Chloride and vaccum salt.
It contains a balanced blend of the two ingredients.
What is hard water?
The water that comes out of your tap is not totally pure. Water is a good solvent and it can absorb chemicals quite easily. When water absorbs magnesium and calcium, especially in areas where limestone is present, it is said to be 'hard'. There are differing degrees of 'hardness' and a test will be able to tell you exactly how hard or soft your water is. An average hard water home builds up 1/16th (1.5mm) of an inch of scale per year.
A quick way to tell if you have hard water and may benefit from having a water softener is to look at the element in a kettle that you have been using for a while. If there are white deposits (limescale) on the element, you have hard water.
There is no evidence that hard water is any risk to your health, but there are a number of disadvantages of having hard water in your home. An automatic water softener is the only way to ensure you get soft water and the many benefits it brings you and your home.
Water softeners should not be confused with water conditioners. These devices are attached to existing pipework and release either magnetic, electromagnetic or radio wave pulses into the water. Unlike Water Softeners, they do not remove calcium and magnesium (hardness) from the water. Therefore there is no reduction in soaps and powders, removal of scum etc, and the lovely silky feel of soft water is not experienced.
What are the benefits of soft water?
The simple answer is that soft water saves you money. There are also other benefits associated with soft water.
Appliances - Limescale deposits build up on immersion heaters, in kettles, washing machines, irons, dishwashers and inside pipes and hot water cylinders. Not only will a water softener start to remove the limescale that is in your pipes and on your heating elements, but it will also prevent any further deposits in the future. Because elements that are already 'furred' up have to heat the limescale before they can heat the water, a scale free system will use less energy, saving on heating bills by as much as 70%. Just 3mm of scale increases your hot water bills by over 25%.
Your appliances will also enjoy a longer life expectancy once an automatic water softener is installed.
Shampoos - Hard water soaks up shampoos and bubble bath. Soft water also has a 'silky' feel to it and helps considerably those people who may suffer from dry skin. A bath stays clean with soft water and showerheads flow better as there is no scale blocking the outlet holes.
Detergents - With soft water in your home, you will need less soap powder in your washing machine and less detergent in your dishwasher. You also won't have to add separate salt to your dishwasher's water softening unit.
Cleaning - Because soft water leaves fewer residues than hard water, you'll need less of your cleaning product and it will take you less time and effort. An American study found that softened water cut the average time required for cleaning baths, sinks, taps, shower screens etc by nearly 40% as against a hard water home. Soft water also means it is easier to keep toilets clean and any crockery from a dishwasher dries both spot and stain free.
Cooking and drinking - People cooking with soft water claim that it enhances the taste and colour of food.
Salt
Hydrosoft Salt is ideal for all makes of water softener
Made with special care for water softness, Hydrosoft water softening salts dissolve evenly, so there are no problems with undissolved salt building up in the base of your water softener.
